Treatments for Mental Retardation are not designed to "cure" the disorder. Rather, therapy goals include reducing safety risks (e.g., helping an individual maintain safety at home or school) and teaching appropriate and relevant life skills. 
Learning Disorders are diagnosed when a student’s achievement in particular areas of learning are significantly less well developed than would be expected given that students’ intelligence and grade level. 
To have a disability means that one has fundamental difficulty accomplishing things that others take for granted.
